About the trip
Fred. Olsen’s Balmoral sets off from Southampton for three days at sea before making the first stop in Cádiz. The Andalusian city’s old quarter and Moorish influence offer a quieter contrast to the cruise. From here, it’s another two days to the Ligurian coast, with a call at La Spezia to access the Cinque Terre’s villages clinging to cliffsides, their pastel colours hardly an exaggeration.
Next, the ship heads to Civitavecchia, the port for Rome. A trip inland will bring you face-to-face with the Colosseum and the endless layers of history in the capital itself. Later, the itinerary has two more Italian stops: Olbia and Alghero, Sardinian towns with different takes on Mediterranean calm and old stone streets. On the way back west, there’s a call at Mahon on Menorca, where the harbour is one of the largest in the Mediterranean.
