Cruise · 8 nights · with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines
An eight-night cruise on Fred. Olsen’s Balmoral through Norway’s fjords, including Lysefjord and its Pulpit Rock, with quiet ports like Leirvik and Nordfjordeid framed by steep waterfalls and mountain walls.
Highlights
The Pulpit Rock from the size-restricted Lysefjord
Langfoss Waterfall audible from the ship’s deck
Kayaking and RIB rides on quiet Norwegian fjords
Passage by Hornelen, Europe’s tallest sea cliff
Visits to small ports Leirvik and Nordfjordeid
Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ Balmoral sets out from Southampton for eight nights among some of Norway’s less crowded fjords. The trip opens with a sail down Lysefjord, where the famous Pulpit Rock rises abruptly above the water, visible from a ship small enough to navigate its narrow stretch. Ports like Leirvik and Nordfjordeid provide chances to stretch legs in small Norwegian towns.
Further north the ship cruises Åkrafjord, known for sharp ravines and the Langfoss waterfall, whose thunder you can hear from the deck. Kayaks and RIBs await those who want close contact with the glassy fjord waters, where steep mountains sometimes drip straight into the sea. The route also includes Skjolden, the terminus of Lustrafjord, a branch reaching into the core of Norway’s fjord country.
After a few days cruising northern fjords and passing Hornelen, Europe’s tallest sea cliff, Balmoral heads back through two days at sea to Southampton. The pace allows time to notice the slow change in light and landscape, a reminder that this is a trip designed for looking steadily rather than rushing on to the next highlight.
