Cruise · 10 nights · with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines
A 10-night cruise from Newcastle aboard Fred. Olsen’s Bolette, crossing the Arctic Circle and visiting Norwegian ports such as Ålesund, Tromsø, and Molde, with chances to spot the Northern Lights from ship and shore.
Highlights
Crossing the Arctic Circle
Cruising beneath Torghatten mountain
Viewing the Seven Sisters mountain range
Northern Lights spotting from ship and shore
Calls at Norwegian townsIncluding Ålesund, Tromsø, Harstad, and Molde
Leaving Newcastle, Bolette heads straight for Norway’s west coast, calling first at Ålesund, a town of Jugendstil architecture perched on islands where the harbour is never far away. The voyage then slips into a slower pace, with time to cruise beneath Torghatten, a mountain with a hole right through it, and alongside the Seven Sisters mountain range, a line of peaks falling directly to the water’s edge.
Crossing the Arctic Circle is a definite milestone, marked by the change in daylight and terrain. Sortland and Vesterålen offer a quieter contrast to Tromsø, whose Arctic cathedral and seafront cafes hint at the town’s appeal beyond northern light spotting. Harstad and Molde complete the circuit, with Molde’s views of countless islands standing in for something a little reminiscent of Switzerland, if Switzerland were more Scandinavian.
Fred. Olsen’s Bolette is a smaller ship, which means the evenings don’t stretch too late and there’s a more intimate feel onboard. The decorated skies may well draw everyone on deck for a while, but the occasional return to land brings its own variety, from the crisp air of the Arctic to the forests framing these Norwegian harbours.
