Cruising by Grímsey, on the Arctic Circle
Fred. Olsen's Bolette departs from Newcastle for ten days exploring Iceland's northern coasts, weaving between small towns and natural sights that are hard to reach otherwise. After a day at sea, the ship passes the jagged flank of Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano and glacier that unsettled European skies in 2010, then circles islands like Elliðaey and Hornbjarg, where the cliffs rise almost vertically from the sea.
The cruise calls at Reykjavík, a compact city where modern cafés and colourful houses sit beside harbour views. Further north lies Ísafjörður, a quiet fishing town with fjords around it, and Akureyri, known as Iceland’s second city with a church that looks out over the water. Between ports, the route passes Vigur Island, home to Arctic birds, and cruises close to Grímsey, the island on the Arctic Circle.
The final days include Seyðisfjörður, a small town with wooden buildings that recall Iceland’s early settlers. The frequent glances at glaciers, whales and seabirds mean keeping binoculars handy: this isn’t a loud cruise, but there’s plenty to look out for from the decks. The Bolette turns back to Newcastle after two days at sea, closing a circuit of Iceland that feels quietly remote rather than rushed.
