This week-long cruise with Fred. Olsen’s Bolette sets sail from Newcastle to the northern reaches of Scotland’s isles. After a day at sea, the first stop is Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands, where Norse heritage and stone circles sit alongside a working harbour.
Next is the Isle of Skye’s Portree, a small town framed by the Cuillin mountains and a reminder that Highland life still carries its Gaelic rhythms. The following days include cruising Loch Hourn, a sea loch with steep rocky sides, before rounding to The Small Isles and the jagged basalt columns of Fingal’s Cave on the Isle of Staffa.
Further west, the ship passes Dutchman’s Cap (Bac Mòr), a solitary volcanic sea stack, on the way to Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides. The island town reveals a quieter side to Scottish island life, with opportunities to watch puffins on Marwick Head close by. The voyage returns to Newcastle, leaving behind a varied coastline that shifts rapidly from cragged cliffs to gentle crofts.
