Next comes a visit to Cotopaxi National Park with a walk around Limpiopungo Lagoon against the snow-capped cone of one of Ecuador’s highest volcanoes. Then the Galapagos islands, starting on Santa Cruz where the volcanic depressions of Los Gemelos give an insight into island formation and giant tortoises roam the highlands. A speedboat journey takes you to Isabela Island with its beaches, lava tunnels and Sierra Negra volcano hike, plus snorkelling among sea lions and rays.
The final days include the Tintoreras Islets close to Isabela, followed by three nights back on Santa Cruz with a beach walk to Tortuga Bay and visits to the Darwin Research Station and a smaller island, where snorkelling and wildlife encounters include penguins and fragile lava formations. It closes back in Tumbaco, Quito.
