The route continues southward from the colonial capital Quito into Cotopaxi National Park, with its high paramo and snow-covered volcano, then across to the Papallacta hot springs and into the Amazon rainforest near Tena. Days here are spent on gentle walks and canoe trips along the Napo River, peering into wild caves and listening for toucans.

A return to highland towns follows, including Banos, Riobamba and the llama-breeding community at Palacio Real, before a final few days in the quietly elegant city of Cuenca.
