Tour · 7 nights · with Explore Worldwide
A small-group tour from Explore Worldwide tracing Costa Rica’s shifting landscapes, from San Jose’s urban coffee to cloud forests, volcanoes and the Pacific coastline around Manuel Antonio.
Highlights
Doka Estate coffee plantation tour near San Jose
Walking on flanks of Arenal Volcano
Rafting safari with wildlife sightings on calm waters
Cloud forest night walk in Monteverde
Manuel Antonio National Park wildlife and beaches
This escorted tour with Explore Worldwide begins in the capital, San Jose, where coffee plants grow alongside the city streets. From there it moves on to La Fortuna, the town spared by Arenal Volcano’s 1968 eruption. A riverside raft trip offers calm waters—and the chance to spot toucans, sloths and caiman.
Journeys
The journey continues to the cloud forest of Monteverde, where Quaker settlers established farms in the 1950s. Optional afternoon activities include hanging bridges and zip wires, followed by a night walk to glimpse pacas and tarantulas. On the return south, the route crosses the Rio Tarcoles Bridge, a reliable perch for crocodile watchers, then stops at Carara Reserve, a haven for scarlet macaws.
The final two nights are spent at Manuel Antonio National Park, where slow-moving sloths and chattering capuchins share the forests behind beaches of white sand. The trip ends back in San Jose after a four to five-hour drive from the coast. The tour strikes a steady pace, with plenty of time to absorb each landscape.
