This eight-night tour by Explore Worldwide travels through a wide variety of Oman’s landscapes, using 4WD vehicles to reach some of the more remote spots. It begins in Muscat, where the old waterfront quarter of Mutrah and the Royal Opera House stand beneath a horseshoe of mountains. After visiting the Grand Mosque, the journey follows the coast to a swim in the turquoise sinkhole of Bimmah and to Sur, where dhow boats are still built by hand.
Next comes a desert camp night in the Wahiba Sands, after a bath in the water pools at Wadi Bani Khalid, with a chance of dune walks at sunset. The tour then climbs to Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams, where a walk along the “Grand Canyon” Balcony Track offers views down a deep gorge. Traditional villages such as Misfah al Abriyyin display terraced farming with active falaj irrigation, while Nizwa includes the Friday goat auction and a 17th-century fort. The trip ends back in Muscat with a visit to Jabreen Castle and an optional dhow sail.
The group nature of the tour means a steady pace, mostly on dirt or paved paths, with some uneven or rocky sections. For those with curiosity about Oman’s natural and cultural diversity, it is paced for comfortable exploration rather than rush through highlights.
