From Nukus, the route takes you to Khiva, with its remarkably preserved Ichan-Kala fortress and the Nurullabay Palace’s blend of European and oriental design. A sunset over the city walls paints a memorable picture. Then comes the road trip to Bukhara, where 2,000-year-old mosques and the towering Shukhov Tower overlook narrow alleys and tea houses surrounding Lyabi Khause Square.
After a free morning or optional trip to Bukhara’s summer Emir’s residence, a high-speed train whisks the group to Samarkand. Here the tour moves among some of the most elaborate tile-covered monuments in Central Asia, including the Registan Square and the Shakhi-Zinda Necropolis. The trip closes with a local cooking demonstration, an apt finale to a mostly land-based journey across a seldom-visited part of the world.
