Archaeological site of ancient Merv near Mary
Medieval monuments, madrasas and minarets in Bukhara
Fortified old town and palaces of Khiva
UNESCO sites Registan and Shah-i-Zinda in Samarkand
This twelve-night tour with Explore Worldwide follows the Silk Road’s ancient path across Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Beginning in Ashgabat, the capital built anew after a devastating earthquake, visitors see Soviet-era monuments alongside more recent developments. Nearby lie the ruined walls of Nissa, once a Parthian capital, before heading east to Mary and the vast archaeological site of Merv, a once-thriving medieval city largely erased by the Mongols.

Crossing into Uzbekistan, the journey continues to Bukhara, a medieval city packed with madrassas, mosques and the Kalyan minaret from which prisoners were once thrown to their deaths. After a free day here, the tour drives to Khiva, surrounded by walls and studded with 18th and 19th-century houses. A panoramic view from the Dzhuma Minaret gives a hint of its labyrinthine old town. An overnight train brings the group to Samarkand, whose blue domes and monuments date largely from Tamerlane’s 14th-century reign. The observatory of Ulug-Beg and jewel-like mausoleums of Shah-i-Zinda complete the sightseeing before moving on to Tashkent, with a blend of Soviet-era architecture and traditional bazaars.
