Cruise · 42 nights · with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines
A 42-night cruise aboard Fred. Olsen’s Balmoral from Alicante, weaving through the Adriatic, Greece, Turkey and more, with time in ports like Mahon, Dubrovnik and Istanbul alongside scenic coastal sailing.
Highlights
Mahon on the Balearic island of Menorca
Cruising the Amalfi Coast and Strait of Messina
Bay of Kotor and Kotor in Montenegro
Greek islands from Corfu to Rhodes
The cultural heritage of Istanbul and Alexandria
Setting off from Alicante, Balmoral steers towards the western Mediterranean with stops including Mahon on Menorca’s straighter streets and the Corsican ports of Bastia and Propriano, where limestone cliffs meet slow-paced harbours. The itinerary then moves eastwards to Italy’s northern coast with Savona and La Spezia before following the Amalfi and Maratea coasts, cruising past the smouldering Stromboli volcano and threading the narrow Strait of Messina.
Continuing into the Adriatic, the ship makes landfall at Valletta, Malta, and follows the Dalmatian coast, with stops in Split, Koper and Kotor—where the bay is so enclosed it resembles a fjord. The eastern Mediterranean section visits a succession of Greek islands from Corfu to Rhodes, including Thessaloniki and Mytilene, before venturing to Cyprus, Alexandria in Egypt, Turkey’s Marmaris and Istanbul. Piraeus calls near the end for Athens, closing this circuit with a rich mixture of coastlines, cities and cultures.
Fred. Olsen’s Balmoral is a ship small enough to slip into ports that larger vessels miss, making this a cruise of local encounters as much as coastal views. It’s a lengthy run, covering a wide sweep of the Mediterranean’s varying shores and traditions, with long stretches at sea between some ports for a calmer rhythm to the days.
