Cruise · 10 nights · with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines
Fred. Olsen’s Balmoral spends ten days visiting the Dalmatian coast and the fjord-like Bay of Kotor, from Malta through Italy, Slovenia, Montenegro and Greece. A smaller ship that slips into harbours large vessels avoid.
Highlights
Cruising the fjord-like Bay of Kotor in Montenegro
Visiting Diocletian’s Palace and markets in Split
Walled old town of KotorWith baroque architecture
Harbours and history of Corfu (Kerkira) and Heraklion
Mediterranean Adriatic coastports from Valletta to Dubrovnik
The Balmoral sets off from Valletta, Malta, to Brindisi on Italy’s Adriatic coast before making for Split in Croatia, a city known for Diocletian’s immense Roman palace and lively markets. From there, the ship calls at Koper in Slovenia, a port with Venetian Gothic architecture and a slower pace.
Montenegro brings the Bay of Kotor, a fjord-length inlet with sheer mountains dropping into calm waters. Balmoral will cruise this unusual landscape and tie up in the walled town of Kotor, where narrow streets and baroque buildings offer a stark contrast to the natural scenery. The route then returns to Croatia for a visit to Dubrovnik, its marble streets and city walls repaired since the war.
On the final leg, the ship crosses the Ionian Sea to Greek islands Kerkira (Corfu) and Heraklion on Crete. Both have lively harbours and historical sites, with Heraklion’s bustling waterfront a reminder that this leg of the cruise ends as it began, in a Mediterranean ambience. The smaller size of Balmoral helps bring the coast closer, avoiding large-ship crowds.
