About the trip
This eight-night escorted tour from Explore Worldwide moves at a considered pace, beginning in Istanbul where the city’s position on two continents comes through in its food and architecture. Highlights include the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar and a street food tasting trail from baklava to the famously ‘wet’ Islak burger.
After four nights in Istanbul, the group catches a high-speed train inland to Konya, the spiritual heartland of the dervishes, before crossing the Anatolian plain. Along the way, there are visits to Catalhoyuk, one of the world’s earliest settlements, and a caravanserai on the Silk Road. The tour ends with three nights in the Cappadocia region, where fairy chimneys and painted rock churches meet vineyards. Among the details to note here is the pottery kebab, cooked under sealed clay pots and served with a bit of a flourish when cracked open at the table.
Meals and tastings are threaded through the itinerary, quietly illustrating the range of Turkish flavours from hearty breakfasts to street snacks and regional specialties. Free afternoons allow time for independent wandering or a Bosphorus boat trip. The tour finishes in Goreme, with an option to arrange transfer from nearby Kayseri Airport.
