About the trip
This escorted tour by Explore Worldwide begins with the Maya ruins of Altun Ha and a two-night stay beside the waterways of Crooked Tree Lagoon, where birds such as the towering jabiru stork come into view. From there, the route heads to Placencia’s beach strip, with an optional snorkelling trip to Laughing Bird Caye on the Belize Barrier Reef.
The journey continues through wild forest in the Cockscomb Basin, known as the world’s first jaguar reserve, and to San Ignacio where the Mayan site of Xunantunich is reached by hand-winched ferry. Crossing into Guatemala, the itinerary includes Tikal, a vast complex with some temples still overtaken by jungle. The final days are spent on Caye Caulker, a modest island with lobster on offer and unoften busy water taxis.
Some days include free time to take things quietly or explore local markets and botanical gardens. The route blends wildlife, history and coast without much hurrying and no bright lights beyond Belize City.
