About the trip
This nine-night escorted tour by Explore Worldwide travels through northern Thailand, starting in Chiang Mai with a visit to an elephant sanctuary where rescued elephants roam freely, followed by exploring the city’s old town and famous temple, Doi Suthep. The route continues south to historic Si Satchanalai and Sukhothai, where you cycle among ancient ruins and stay overnight in a village homestay, meeting artisans working with bamboo and fabrics.
Further on, the tour passes through Uthai Thani and Ayutthaya, with visits to former Siamese capitals rich in temples and palaces. Kanchanaburi offers a sobering connection to World War II history via the Bridge over the River Kwai and Hellfire Pass. You’ll also take a refreshing morning swim at Erawan Waterfall and have a chance to bamboo raft the Kwai River. On the final stretch to Bangkok, the market set along an active railway track stops for passing trains in a most practical manner.
In Bangkok, the itinerary includes the Grand Palace and Wat Po, with free time to explore Chinatown or the city's parks. It’s a varied route that balances well-trodden sights with quieter moments alongside rural life and riverside views.
