Twelve nights with Explore Worldwide tracing a route from Buenos Aires’s eclectic streets to Rio’s famous beaches, including the thunderous Iguazu Falls, colonial Paraty and the isolated Ilha Grande island.
Highlights
Tango and historic architecture of Buenos Aires
Argentinian and Brazilian sides of Iguazu Falls
Colonial streets and beaches of Paraty
Hiking to Lopes Mendes beach, Ilha Grande
Corcovado summit and Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio
This escorted tour with Explore Worldwide begins in Buenos Aires, where European architecture and lively street markets mingle with the city’s restless energy. Early days are spent on foot around Plaza de Mayo and free afternoons allow for wandering San Telmo’s weekend tango or Recoleta Cemetery’s elaborate vaults.
The rhythm shifts as the group flies to Iguazu to see the vast waterfall system spilling over cliffs into a curved amphitheatre. Crossing into Brazil offers a chance to view the falls from the other side, with toucans and butterflies flitting through the spray-soaked forest. Then it’s down the coast to Paraty, whose cobblestones and colonial charm make it an excellent spot for a slow day exploring, leavened by optional boat trips or cycling.
Ilha Grande, a car-free island reached by public boat, boasts trails through forest to Lopes Mendes beach, a stretch of sand few Brazilian beaches can equal for remoteness. The tour concludes in Rio, with its mountains, beaches and city life – a walk through Santa Teresa’s winding streets shows a creative side far from Copacabana’s bustle. The final day’s free to choose how to take it.
