About the trip
This seven-night walking tour with Explore Worldwide is paced to give a good feel for Lanzarote’s diverse landscapes along its east coast. Starting in Puerto del Carmen, known for its lengthy promenade and quiet hotel location near the old port, the itinerary leads into the island’s volcanic interior and rugged coast.
Walks take in the lunar terrain of the Ajaches hills and dramatic Timanfaya volcanic park, as well as the sheer cliffs of Famara capped by the Mirador del Rio, a viewpoint cleverly built into the lava rock by local artist César Manrique. There’s a visit to La Geria’s vineyard landscape, where vines grow in stone-pocked pits, and time towards the end of the week to relax or take a ferry to the neighbouring island of La Graciosa.
Villages such as Femes, Maguez and the valley of Haria punctuate the walking days with glimpses of traditional island life, and the programme ends with a stroll beside the sea at Guatiza, near Manrique’s cactus garden. The option for longer or shorter walks and a measured approach means there’s little need to rush your boots off here.
