The tour begins in Antananarivo, Madagascar’s capital spread across 12 hills where French colonial architecture rubs shoulders with modern blocks. Heading south by bus, the route passes terraced rice paddies and volcanic fields before reaching Ambositra, the island’s woodcarving centre, and then on to the lush rainforest of Ranomafana National Park. Here, hikes take you through primary forest in search of lemurs, birds and small waterfalls.

Next comes Andringitra National Park, where you’ll camp in simple forest clearings and trek up to the highest point in southern Madagascar, Pic Imarivolanitra. This part of the tour climbs through diverse vegetation from forest to alpine meadow and granite boulders, with basic facilities along the way. Afterward, you’ll travel through Isalo’s sandstone massif, with its dry forest and natural pools, then on to Ifaty Beach on the west coast. The final days include a gentle walk up Ambohidrabiby Hill near Tana, through villages and rice paddies.
Explore Worldwide run this escorted, small-group trek at a steady pace with a mix of hiking and travel by bus or 4WD. Some nights are spent at basic campsites, others in simple lodges and hotels. The route avoids the tourist trail and offers plenty of wildlife watching and unusual scenery, ending quietly back in the capital.
