This fourteen-night tour with Explore Worldwide crosses Madagascar from the capital Antananarivo to the spiny forests of the south coast. The trip begins in the highlands, where the city’s hills rise steeply and French colonial buildings jostle with markets and apartment blocks. Early on, a visit to Andasibe’s Analamazoatra Reserve offers the chance to hear the Indri Indri lemur calls echoing through the forest.

Following a long transfer, the route heads to the spa town of Antsirabe and its mixture of missionary-era charm and colourful rickshaws. Woodcarvers in Ambositra provide another cultural glimpse before entering the rainforest at Ranomafana National Park, home to the rare Golden Bamboo Lemur. Later, the tour visits the sandstone canyons of Isalo National Park, where dry forest meets natural pools known as Piscine Naturelle.
The last days bring a change of pace with time on Ifaty Beach and walks through the ‘Spiny Forest’, dotted with endemic birds and fishing villages that still use traditional canoes. The tour ends with a stop at Ambohimanga, the oldest palace in Madagascar, offering commanding views over rice paddies and city. There is travel along some challenging roads, but also moments of quiet and colour through markets and villages.
