This escorted tour with Explore Worldwide unfolds over two weeks, tracing Sri Lanka’s varied terrain by foot. Beginning in the fishing town of Negombo, the route takes in the cave temples of Dambulla and a jeep safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park. The following days include an early climb of Sigiriya’s Lion Rock and an afternoon stroll around Polonnaruwa’s ancient ruins.
Journeys
Into the highlands, the trek passes through the Knuckles Mountain Range’s forests and grasslands with an optional climb to Mini World's End. Kandy follows, where the Temple of the Tooth holds a reputed relic and local craft workshops hum quietly in the evenings. Near Hatton and Dalhousie, the ascent of Adam’s Peak begins around midnight for sunrise views from the summit. Subsequent hikes descend the Devil’s Staircase to Bambarakanda Waterfall and through the Sinharaja Forest Reserve’s dense rainforest with a specialist guide.
The last days alternate between laid-back beach time at Koggala, a train ride to Colombo, and a city walking tour highlighting colonial and modern influences. Accommodation varies from simple lodges to a family-run jungle guesthouse, each lending a distinct sense of place. The days are active but balanced with free time for local sights and quiet moments.
