Highlights
Burana Tower and felt-making cooperative in Kyrgyzstan
Boorsok breadmaking and yurt camp on Lake Issyk Kul
Charyn Canyon's Valley of Castles rock formations
Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi in Turkestan
Registan Square and Gur Emir in Samarkand
This escorted tour with Explore Worldwide begins in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s youthful capital, before winding through the Southern shore of Lake Issyk Kul where crafts and eagle falconry hold strong. The route crosses into Kazakhstan for visits to the red rock formations of Charyn Canyon and the former capital Almaty, finishing with a pulse of city life and an overnight train to Turkestan.
Journeys
In Turkestan, the 14th-century mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi hints at centuries of faith and empire before the journey continues into Uzbekistan. Here, the tour moves through Tashkent’s Soviet-era blend and heads to Bukhara’s maze of mosques and bazaars, then to Samarkand to stand before Registan Square’s vast, blue-tiled madrasahs and Tamerlane's tomb. The scale and detail of these sites remain quietly impressive.
Throughout the tour, a few stretches of road and an overnight train remind travellers that the Silk Road was always a route for the patient and curious rather than the rushed. On the last day in Samarkand, there is space to linger or move on independently, with local rail options to extend the stay. It offers a genuine if purposeful look at three Central Asian nations linked by history and geography.
