Tour · 13 nights · with Explore Worldwide
A 13-night small-group tour with Explore Worldwide travelling overland from Kyrgyzstan’s alpine heart through Uzbekistan’s historic Silk Road cities, combining mountain pastures, ancient ruins and local crafts with a steady but varied pace.
Highlights
Burana Tower, oldest minaret in Central Asia
Petroglyphs at Cholpon-Ata dating back to 7th century BC
Stay in yurts by alpine Song Kul Lake
Eagle hunting demonstration in Bokonbayevo
Sulayman-Too mountain pilgrimage site in Osh
This escorted tour from Explore Worldwide begins in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s young capital, with a walk through Oak Park and views of its Soviet-era architecture. Heading east, the route follows the northern shore of Issyk Kul Lake, visiting the brick-work Burana Tower and petroglyphs at Cholpon-Ata before reaching Karakol where Chinese and Russian architecture sit side by side.
Journeys
Further into the high Tien Shan mountains, the tour stays in yurts beside Song Kul Lake, allowing time for walks on grassy slopes dotted with wild Edelweiss. Along the way, there’s a glimpse into the handcraft of felt-making in Kochkor and a chance to meet an eagle hunter practising Central Asia’s ancient falconry. After valley walks near Jalal-Abad and Osh’s Sulayman-Too pilgrimage site, the journey crosses into Uzbekistan’s Fergana Valley and moves west through ceramic-making Rishtan and Kokand, concluding with sightseeing in Tashkent including its rebuilt city centre and metro stations.
The itinerary spans diverse landscapes and cultures at a thoughtful pace, with evenings spent in local guesthouses and performances of traditional music. It draws quietly on the Silk Road’s long history rather than showing its most famous sites all at once, inviting time to consider the region’s everyday life and heritage.
