About the trip
This escorted tour with Explore Worldwide opens in Kota Kinabalu, where the mix of cultures spills into the streets and food markets. After leaving the city, you'll pause in the village of Tanak Nabalu to share lunch with the Dusun tribe, then stroll the Botanical Gardens near Mount Kinabalu, spotting slipper orchids and pitcher plants.
Next, the tour moves on to Sepilok, home to both proboscis monkeys and orangutans. The visit includes the Sun Bear Conservation Centre and walks across a canopy walkway popular with birdwatchers — orangutans can be seen here if luck is on your side. Later days bring river cruises on the Kinabatangan, where pygmy elephants are elusive but possible guests, and night walks may turn up civets or slow lorises.
The last stops are in Tabin Wildlife Reserve, where mud volcanoes offer a salt lick for wildlife and an opportunity for a mud facial, and the coastal town of Sandakan, known for fresh seafood. The scenery of palm oil plantations on the road to Tabin offers a necessary, if uncomfortable, view of the pressures on Borneo’s forests.
