Eleven nights with Explore Worldwide, following a small-group escorted tour through Japan’s Honshu and Kyushu islands, from Tokyo’s neon streets to the quieter outposts of Hirado Island and Nagasaki’s harbour.
Highlights
Boat trip on Tokyo's Sumida River
Hot springs and sulphur pools at Owakudani
Geisha dance and visit in Kyoto's Gion district
Peace Memorial Park and museum in Hiroshima
Cruise through the 'Ninety-Nine Islands' near Sasebo
This eleven-night tour with Explore Worldwide traces the footsteps of Japan’s Shogun era and modern history, moving from the neon-lit sprawl of Tokyo to the quieter rural shores of Hirado Island. Starting in Tokyo, the itinerary includes a river boat ride, a visit to the oldest temple Senso-ji, and a stake in the city’s varied neighbourhoods.
Journeys
The route climbs into Hakone National Park for bubbling sulphur springs and views of Mount Fuji, followed by the bullet train to Kyoto, where a geisha dance and the Golden Pavilion provide a study in contrasts. Hiroshima shows the scars of wartime with visits to its Peace Memorial Park and museum, before the journey continues to Nagasaki and the outlying islands of Hirado and Ikitsuki. A local expert joins to guide through fishing communities, tea fields and a museum housed in a former lord’s residence.
The tour ends at Fukuoka after a train ride from Sasebo and a cruise through a jagged archipelago known as the ‘Ninety-Nine Islands’. Along the way, the use of traditional ryokans and hot spring baths add local customs to the mix. Luggage is forwarded between key stops, easing the frequent transfers on this itinerary.
