Next comes Kyoto, where you’ll stroll through the forested slopes of Fushimi Inari’s thousand torii gates and join an evening walk in the Gion district. Nearby, the walk through Arashiyama’s bamboo grove offers a different kind of green backdrop. Then the group moves closer to Mount Fuji for a night at a traditional ryokan, complete with a steaming onsen spa and views of the volcano’s flat-topped cone.

The final stop is Tokyo. The city’s electric streets, historic neighbourhoods and endless variety require days to even get a sense of, so a free day here is a welcome chance to make your own plan. Trains, local buses and plenty of walking mean you’ll get the busy streets under your feet by the end. It’s modestly paced, socially minded travel with a helpful CEO on hand in small groups of around a dozen travellers.
