The trek continues gradually higher, moving through rainforest, moorland, and heath, passing camps such as Second Cave and Kikelewa, with views of the Eastern ice fields and the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. The going is slow to aid acclimatisation, which is crucial for tackling Africa’s highest peak safely.
The final nights include crossing the ‘saddle’ between the volcanoes and a midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak at nearly 5,900 metres. After descending past Mandara Hut and through tropical forest, the group returns to Moshi, where a shower and a meal mark the end of a long climb. It’s a tour that requires stamina and patience, but also offers plenty of time for quiet reflection on the mountain’s various landscapes.
