The route rises to the moorlands and volcanic plateaus of Shira Ridge before reaching the Lava Tower at 4,640 metres, a good vantage point before descending into the Barranco Valley. The climb continues over the Barranco Wall, a rocky cliff over 250 metres high formed by ancient landslides, leading through alpine desert and then to the Barafu Camp, where climbers rest up for the midnight summit push.
The long final day is a climb through scree and near glaciers to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point, followed by a descent back through forest to Mweka Gate and a return to Moshi. The steady pace allows for acclimatisation and offers a close look at the changing ecological zones of Kilimanjaro, with porters carrying camp equipment so walkers manage only day essentials.
