This escorted tour by Explore Worldwide covers a varied route through Algeria’s lesser-visited cultural landscape. Starting in the capital, Algiers, the itinerary moves along the Mediterranean coast to sites such as Tipaza’s open-air Roman ruins and Cherchell’s museum, home to a marble Apollo and a colossal Augustus.
Leaving the coast behind, the tour heads south to the edge of the Sahara in Ghardaia and the M’zab Valley, where whitewashed hillside towns cluster alongside palm groves. The rocky terrain shifts to dunes near Ouargla before a lengthy drive north through Ghoufi Canyon’s sandstone walls to Batna.
The final days visit some of Algeria’s finest Roman sites, including grid-planned Timgad and hilltop Djemila, as well as Constantine with its bridges spanning deep ravines. The trip ends back in Algiers with a stroll through the Kasbah and a look at the Ottoman Bastion 23. The pace is a mix of walking and road travel, with plenty of archaeological sites and local markets along the way.
