Tour · 8 nights · with Explore Worldwide
An escorted small-group tour with Explore Worldwide into Algeria’s desert heart, travelling from the Mediterranean coast to remote camps amid dunes, rock art and vast silence in the Algerian Sahara.
Highlights
Kasbah quarter and Bastion 23 Palace in Algiers
Local market and palm groves in Djanet
Ancient rock art along Tassili n’Ajjer plateau
Desert camps with solar powered tents and campfire dinners
Walking and 4WD travel through sand dunes and canyons
This eight-night escorted tour with Explore Worldwide begins in Algiers, where French colonial boulevards meet the narrow alleys of the Kasbah, topped by the seafront Bastion 23 Palace and the Monument to the Martyrs on its hill. After a late-night flight south, the landscape changes dramatically. Arriving in Djanet, the so-called "Pearl of the Tassili", the journey soon turns into desert travel by 4WD through sand, rock formations and ancient Tuareg territory.
The coming days are spent in camps far from mobile phones, travelling in small groups to see prehistoric rock art and some extraordinary geological features in the Tassili n’Ajjer plateau. Nights bring clear skies and a rhythm that suits a desert environment rather than any clock. Long stretches through wide canyons and among wind-sculpted arches lead to camps under the open stars, where meals are freshly prepared, and the only sound may be the shifting sand and distant campfire conversation.
The final day follows the edge of the desert for a return drive to Djanet. There is time to reconnect with modern life before a late-night flight back to Algiers. It is a holiday that sets both pace and perspective quite differently from the usual city tours, with a quiet reminder that vastness has a different shape when no one else is around.
