About the trip
This escorted tour with Explore Worldwide begins in Algiers, threading along the Mediterranean coast to ancient sites such as Tipaza and Cherchell, before a short flight south to the Saharan town of Ghardaia. Here, the white and pink houses of the M'zab Valley reveal a living chapter of Ibadi Berber culture, punctuated by lively markets and date palm groves.
From desert plateaus to the high Atlas mountains, the route passes through the impressive Ghoufi Canyon, then on to Roman ruins at Timgad and the cliff-edged bridges of Constantine. Eastwards, the journey leads to Djemila’s hillside Roman town and Setif’s fine mosaics before returning to Algiers for a night flight to the far south.
The second week is a marked change of pace, with 4WD travel deep into the Sahara’s Tassili n'Ajjer plateau. Nights alternate between well-appointed fixed camps and rustic tented sites, close to ancient rock paintings and monumental sandstone formations. Time slows under vast skies, where sharp dunes and twilight walks offer welcome distraction from modern life.
