Fred. Olsen's Bolette sets off from Liverpool for a leisurely nineteen days of Mediterranean and North African coastlines. After three days at sea, the ship docks in Tangier where the scent of spices drifts from souks beside ancient kasbah walls. The short sail past the Strait of Gibraltar leads to Gibraltar itself, a curious mix of British outpost and Mediterranean port.
From there, the cruise calls at Cartagena’s historic Spanish harbour and Algiers, where French-colonial arcades stand opposite lively markets. An overnight stay in Valletta offers a chance to visit the quiet fortified city of Mdina nearby and catch some of the colourful Malta Carnival parades. Ports in Tunisia, Cagliari on Sardinia and Melilla – a Spanish city on the North African coast – follow, each a little different patchwork of Mediterranean and African influences.
Back across the Atlantic-facing Portuguese port of Matosinhos, Bolette crosses these waters once more before returning to Liverpool. From the views atop Gibraltar’s rock to the medieval streets of Valletta, the cruise combines unhurried time at sea with a string of varied coastal towns and cities.
