About the trip
Ambassador Cruise Line’s Renaissance takes you on a two-week circuit of the eastern Caribbean, beginning and ending in Bridgetown, Barbados. After Barbados the ship moves north-west to Guadeloupe’s Pointe a Pitre, a town marked by its duty-free shops rather than the history of its streets. From there it calls at St Kitts, with its views of volcanic peaks, before threading between the British Virgin Islands and Antigua.
Midway through the voyage, you reach Saint Maarten and St Lucia, each with their own coastline shaped by volcanic forces. Willemstad on Curaçao is notable for its Dutch colonial architecture and pastel-coloured buildings along the waterfront. The cruise also includes a visit to Dominica, one of the few Caribbean islands with extensive rainforests and waterfalls that rumble faintly from the ship’s deck.
The route retraces some steps as it returns via Guadeloupe and completes the circle in Bridgetown. The ship is a vessel that balances relaxed days in port with the chance to watch the sea change colour with each island passed. Nothing here is rushed, though the itinerary covers a fair number of ports in 14 nights.
