Cruise · 18 nights · with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines
Eighteen nights on Fred. Olsen’s Borealis, tracing a Mediterranean arc from Portugal’s Lisbon to Italy’s Amalfi Coast and Riviera, with stops in Sardinia, Rome’s port and Spain’s Cádiz along the way.
Highlights
Two days in LisbonWith views of Belém Tower and Discovery Monument
Passage along the Amalfi Coast cliffs
Visits to Sardinia’s Cagliari and Italy’s Rome gateway Civitavecchia
Three days sailing between Spain’s Cartagena and Cádiz
Calls in La Spezia and Savona near the Cinque Terre villages
Setting out from Liverpool, this cruise first calls at Lisbon, where Belém Tower stands at the river’s edge beside the monument to the Portuguese discoveries. The route then turns south towards Sardinia’s Cagliari, a city shaped by layers of Mediterranean history and sun-bleached stone.
Passing the Amalfi Coast from the sea offers a line of cliffs that are better seen than described — a reminder that some things travel by sight and smell rather than words. Calls at Salerno and Gaeta provide quieter alternatives to the crowds further south, before the ship docks at Civitavecchia, the gateway to Rome’s classical monuments. Further north, La Spezia and Savona bring the Italian Riviera into focus, with the chance to visit the villages of Cinque Terre close by.
After Italy, the cruise visits Cartagena and Cádiz on Spain’s southern coast, before three days at sea return Borealis to Liverpool. The ship is small enough to slip neatly into ports others avoid, making the pace of travel both varied and unhurried.
