Highlights
Nine nights cruising eight Norwegian fjords
Passage by Hornelen, Europe’s highest sea cliff
Views of Langfoss waterfall from the ship
Rauma Railway trip opportunity in Åndalsnes
Cruise to the innermost point of Sognefjord at Skjolden
This nine-night cruise with Fred. Olsen’s Balmoral starts from Portsmouth and heads north, crossing two nights at sea before arriving at Åndalsnes, a small town framed by steep mountains and the Rauma Railway. The ship then weaves through Romsdalsfjorden, Langfjorden and Eresfjorden, leading to Nordfjordeid on the fjord’s edge.
The route continues along Nordfjord and passes Hornelen, known as Europe’s highest sea cliff, visible from the ship in all its brooding scale. Further south are Vikøyri and the deep waters of Sognefjord, reaching as far inland as Skjolden. From there the cruise visits Eidfjord, within Hardangerfjord, before sailing past Åkrafjord and the Langfoss waterfall, where cascading water tumbles from a height of over 600 metres. The last fjord on the itinerary is Lysefjord, with its famously sheer cliffs above the water.
With Balmoral’s size allowing closer approaches than larger liners, there’s time for a rail trip or cable car ride ashore if you wish. The cruise ends with a final day at sea back to Portsmouth, giving a moment to reflect on the long, quiet stretches and sharp contrasts of fjords and waterfalls that mark Norway’s western coast.
