Highlights
Puffin season on remote Scottish islands
Slieve League Cliffs towering above the Atlantic
Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland
Cruising by Fingal's Cave, Isle of Staffa
Kilt Rock and Mealt Waterfall, Isle of Skye
This eight-night cruise on Fred. Olsen’s Bolette sets off from Newcastle, heading north to the Shetland Islands’ Lerwick before turning west to Stornoway on the Outer Hebrides. The early part of the trip feels like a remoter version of Scottish island life, with chances to spot puffins and dolphins in quieter waters.
From there the ship crosses to Killybegs on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, passing the towering Slieve League Cliffs – among Europe’s highest sea cliffs – before calling on Belfast, Northern Ireland’s maritime heart. Later, Bolette navigates close by Fingal’s Cave on the Isle of Staffa, hollowed by relentless waves into columns of basalt, and pauses to view Harp Rock on Lunga, an important seabird breeding site.
The cruise rounds off with several scenic hours cruising around the Isle of Skye, passing the cascading Mealt Waterfall and Kilt Rock, then through the sheltered inlets of Kyle, Loch Carron and Loch Torridon. It’s a well-paced route to take in varied coastline and wildlife without long hiking or rushed shore time. The route brings you back to Newcastle with the kind of sights that linger longer than a postcard.
