About the trip
Fred. Olsen’s Bolette spends ten nights sailing north from Newcastle, with the first port of call Reykjavík. The Icelandic capital’s laid-back streets lead easily to the Blue Lagoon or the newer Sky Lagoon, both inviting spots for a warm bath after a chilly day ashore. From here the itinerary threads through fjords and cliffs along the west and north coasts, including Grundarfjörður—a gateway to the Kirkjufell mountain—and passes Látrabjarg, home to vast seabird colonies.
Stops at Ísafjörður and Seyðisfjörður showcase traditional fishing ports with brightly coloured houses and access to walks or boat trips. A highlight is whale-watching in Húsavík, where the chances of spotting humpbacks and minke whales peak. The route crosses the Arctic Circle near Grímsey Island, offering a moment to stretch the legs with a touch of the midnight sun overhead. The cliffs of Hornbjarg loom nearby, a reminder that Iceland’s rough coasts can be as dramatic as its waterfalls.
The cruise is paced with several sea days for soaking in the scenery and the unusual sensation of the midnight sun. Returning to Newcastle, there’s a sense of having travelled some of the less visited parts of Iceland’s coastline on a ship small enough to bring you close to wildlife and places without the rush of a tour coach.
