The route then leads inland to Prescott and the artsy town of Sedona, not far from Flagstaff’s clear night skies and Lowell Observatory. There’s a full day at the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, where the Colorado River carves out one of the world’s largest gorges, followed by a leg along historic Route 66 past Hoover Dam to Las Vegas—bright lights and themed hotels with no shortage of diversions.

Returning west through the Mojave Desert and California’s fertile Central Valley, the tour pauses at Yosemite National Park. Here amidst waterfalls and mountain peaks, it’s possible to walk beside Yosemite Falls or spot wildlife along the river. Finally, San Francisco unfolds with its Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown and waterfront restaurants, punctuated by a three-course farewell meal by Fisherman’s Wharf.
