About the trip
This small-group tour by G Adventures begins with a leisurely couple of days in Madrid, where one can wander Plaza Mayor and the busy Gran Vía at will. After a short train journey, the route shifts to the pilgrim's pace in Sarria, a town known for its antique shops and as the traditional starting point for the last stretch of the Camino de Santiago.
From Sarria, the group sets out on foot to cover about 20 to 25 kilometres each day, traversing small villages and rustic paths that pilgrims have taken for centuries, with luggage transported separately. The pilgrimage concludes at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, where walkers receive their 'compostela' certificate, marked by at least two stamps a day as proof of their effort.
This is a walking holiday that demands stamina and readiness for the occasional early start and long day on foot—around six to ten hours. The balance between a cultural city stay and a serious trek along a time-honoured pilgrimage route gives a varied rhythm to the trip, without the gloss of luxury, but with the company of likeminded travellers and a knowledgeable CEO guiding the way.
