Highlights of Java & Sumatra

This small-group tour from G Adventures travels across two of Indonesia’s most compelling islands, Sumatra and Java, over 14 days. The adventure begins in Medan, Sumatra’s largest city, from where you head into the rainforest of Gunung Leuser National Park. Here, shared mornings might find you following the cautious, quiet movements of wild orangutans amid dense jungle.

Later the route moves to Lake Toba, the world’s largest volcanic lake, where you can visit Batak villages and contemplate the dramatic Sipiso Piso waterfall. Crossing to Java, the itinerary includes Yogyakarta with its layered history shown in the Mangkunegaran Palace and the bright riot of Jodipan Colourful Village. One morning is set aside for the extraordinary sight of a sunrise over Mount Bromo’s volcanic slopes fetched by a robust jeep.

Throughout the trip, local artisan visits, batik making and village walks bring everyday life into sharper focus. Shared homestays and a mix of transport methods add texture to the journey. The tour finishes in Surabaya, with your group leader on hand throughout to smooth over travel niggles and deepen understanding of this large and diverse country.
