Tour · 12 nights · with Explore Worldwide
A 12-night escorted tour with Explore Worldwide through the Ivory Coast, tracing its north-south route from Abidjan’s cityscape to tribal villages and finishing on the Atlantic beaches of Grand Bassam.
Highlights
The Goli mask ceremony in Gbomi village
Senoufo villages with iron forging and clay bead making
The Boloy Leopard Dance by initiated Senoufo men
The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro
Golden sand beaches of Grand Bassam
This small-group tour begins in Abidjan, the country's commercial hub with its glossy skyscrapers and lively arts scene. After a free day to settle in, the route travels north via Yamoussoukro, pausing to see local women prepare attieke and to try weaving traditional kente cloth.
The itinerary dives deep into diverse tribal cultures, including Baule mask dances in Gbomi, the seven-year initiation rituals of the Senoufo, and the acrobatic panther dances of the Boloy Leopard society. The journey travels through villages with hand-carved bas-relief houses, visits a sacred Niofoin building, and ends with some downtime on the golden sands of Grand Bassam, where bathing in the sea is discouraged but the slow pace and humid air offer their own rewards.
Operated by Explore Worldwide as an escorted tour, this trip mixes long drives with hands-on craft workshops and glimpses of ceremonies rarely seen by outsiders. The modest hotels in the north contrast with the more polished stops deeper south, which all serve as a reminder that travel here is about taking time to understand a complex and seldom-visited part of West Africa.
