This nine-night small-group trip with G Adventures navigates the remote mountain kingdom of Bhutan, where happiness is measured more than GDP. Seasons
From there you move on to nature-rich valleys like Phobjikha and Khewa, where hikes lead to monasteries such as Gangtey Goempa. A family farm meal offers a chance to handle the famously fiery ema datshi (chilli cheese). Punakha’s Dzong and fertility shrine require a steady pace up the hillside to reach, while Paro’s fortress and the cliffside Taktsang Monastery – stomachs steady for the climb – are punctuated by visits to temples steeped in centuries of tradition.
Travelling by private vehicle along winding mountain roads, expect some motion sickness and modest accommodation that reflects Bhutan’s quieter, traditional nature. Electricity and wifi can be patchy and dogs bark well into the night, so earplugs might be wise. The trip moves at a thoughtful pace, matching the landscape’s calm and the country’s slow rhythm.
