About the trip
The Southern Divide begins in Peru’s Sacred Valley, where the lives of past and present overlap amid terraced hills and traditional communities. A train ride to Machu Picchu offers a chance to see the ancient Incan citadel, following one of several possible circuits designed to manage visitor numbers.
Crossing into Bolivia, colonial towns like Sucre and Potosí reveal layers of history, from silver mines to ochre-coloured streets. Lake Titicaca presents a chance to observe the floating islands of Uros, where communities maintain an unusual way of life on reed islands. The three-day 4x4 crossing of Salar de Uyuni includes nights in basic lodges, with power and hot water not always guaranteed — a reminder that this is a journey venturing well off the beaten path.
The final days in Chile’s Atacama Desert bring visits to the Valley of the Moon and otherworldly terrain. Throughout, local guides and a G Adventures CEO provide insight and support, while group sizes remain small to balance camaraderie with comfort.
