About the trip
This escorted tour with Explore Worldwide covers northern Argentina’s dramatic gorges, vineyards and colourful villages before crossing into Bolivia’s surreal Altiplano. Starting in Buenos Aires, you’ll fly north to Salta then travel through the Quebrada de las Conchas and Cafayate wine region. The seven-coloured hills around Purmamarca offer a short walk before driving up to the white expanse of Salinas Grandes salt flats.
Crossing into Bolivia, the focus is on vast landscapes around Tupiza and the eerie train graveyard near Uyuni. A full day on the salt flats includes stops at giant cacti islands and flamingo-filled lagoons, with a simple hotel stay at high altitude. On the way into Chile, visit rare flamingo habitats and the steaming geysers of Sol de Manana.
San Pedro de Atacama, a dusty desert town below volcanoes, offers free time and a walk in Valle de la Luna with its eroded salt formations. The tour closes with a bus tour around Santiago’s historic centre, retracing the city’s colonial Spanish roots under the Andes.
