About the trip
This small group tour by Explore Worldwide begins in Tunis, where the modern capital stands alongside the remains of Carthage’s punishing past. After a day exploring the imposing Roman ruins at Dougga, the itinerary dips south to Kairouan, home to Tunisia’s Great Mosque and a medieval medina still humming with crafts and spices.
Crossing the salt flats of the Sahara, the tour reaches the desert camp outside Douz for a night under the stars with tents that include simple ensuite facilities. Further south, Matmata’s unusual underground cave dwellings reveal Berber life adapted to the desert climate. Heading north again, the Roman amphitheatre of El Djem offers a glimpse of gladiatorial games past, before the tour closes with strolls through Sousse’s medina and the colourful coastal village of Sidi Bou Said.
Throughout the nine nights, the pace ranges from focused archaeological visits to stretches of free time in oasis towns, concluding back in Tunis where mosaic-filled halls of the Bardo museum contrast with café terraces gazing across the Gulf of Tunis.
