The adventure continues in Uganda, where a guest farm near Kibale National Park serves as base for chimpanzee treks, and on to Queen Elizabeth National Park, known for its elephants and hippos. Then it is on foot through Rwanda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for guided gorilla trekking, in the company of experienced trackers and guards, a grim but necessary precaution for these rare encounters. While camping and simple tents dominate the accommodation, moments such as a lunch at a local community centre in Kigali help ground the trip beyond wildlife sightings.

Travelling between regions can be unavoidably long and bumpy, but the richness of the surroundings and the chance to visit both famous reserves and community projects give the itinerary a well-rounded character.
