Days here include trails through the unusual karst formations of Torcal de Antequera, a picnic spot among the limestone pillars, and visits to prehistoric dolmens more than 5,000 years old. One of the week’s peaks is the Caminito del Rey, a walkway high above the river Guadalhorce valley where vertiginous cliffs rise 700 metres. The final days take in the castle-hilltop parador of Jaen, whose walls offer 360-degree views and a chance to reflect on the week’s varied terrain and history.

Walks vary from flat valleys where sheep graze to stony mountain paths, all within easy reach of interesting towns. There are no early starts here, but expect steady uphill sections and careful footing in places. Some evenings leave space to try local restaurants, others finish simply with wine tastings amid the foothills.
