About the trip
This 11-night escorted tour by Explore Worldwide begins in Kathmandu, Nepal’s chaotic and colourful capital, where temples and shrines pepper the narrow streets against the Himalayan backdrop. After an overnight in the city, the group flies to Paro in Bhutan, where terraced farmland lies beneath some of the country’s largest dzongs.
The itinerary weaves through Bhutan’s valleys and mountain passes, pausing for the Black Neck Crane Festival in Phobjika Valley and visits to Punakha and its winter-time dzong. The walk to Taktsang Monastery is a memorable challenge for most, climbing along forested paths to a cliff-perched temple that locals call Tiger’s Nest.
Returning to Kathmandu for a couple of days reveals a very different side to the region, with visits to Durbar Square, the Temple of Pashupatinath and the Bodnath stupa alongside time for a free day in the medieval town of Bhaktapur or the Monkey Temple. The tour keeps a steady pace with time for a quiet yak butter tea stop amid high mountain farming, and finishes comfortably after breakfast on day twelve.
