History

Tour · 7 nights · with Explore Worldwide
A small-group walking holiday with Explore Worldwide across Croatia’s national parks and coastal towns, from Zagreb’s cobbled streets to the waterfalls of Plitvice and the karst mountains near the Adriatic coast.
Highlights
Walking in Plitvice Lakes National Park on wooden walkways
Hiking through Velebit mountain range and karst formations
Boat trip to Visovac island and Franciscan monastery
Exploring Zagreb’s Upper Town and Medvednica mountain hike
Visit to Zadar’s Sea Organ and Roman ruins
This seven-night escorted walking holiday with Explore Worldwide takes in a variety of landscapes, beginning in Zagreb. The Croatian capital is quieter than many European cities, with a compact Upper Town and a cable car so short it barely counts. From here, a hike on Medvednica mountain leads to a mountain hut known for its apple strudel and goulash.
Journeys
History
The itinerary moves south to Plitvice Lakes National Park, where wooden walkways thread through a series of turquoise lakes and waterfalls shaped by calcium deposits and moss. Later walks explore the karst peaks of the Velebit mountain range and the Paklenica Gorge, both offering rocky terrain and sweeping views towards the Adriatic. One evening is spent in coastal Split, staying within the walls of Diocletian's Palace, a Roman structure now hosting narrow streets and churches.
Along the way, highlights include a boat trip to Visovac island and the Sea Organ of Zadar, whose notes rise from the sea. The walking ranges from flat boardwalks to more challenging ascents, with occasional uneven ground where walking poles might be welcome. The tour finishes with time to wander Split before breakfast and departure.
