About the trip
This eight-night escorted cycling holiday begins in Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, where narrow lanes lead past churches, a synagogue and the brick-domed sulphur baths. Early rides follow the Mtkvari River through villages to the cave town of Uplistsikhe, carved into rock and once a Silk Road stop.
Further rides take you to the frescoed Kintsvisi Monastery perched in forested hills, and the dramatic cliffside network of caves at Vardzia, once a fortress and cultural centre near Turkey’s border. You pass alongside Georgia’s largest lake and climb the Gombori Pass, rewarded with views over Kakheti’s vineyards. Visits include family-run guesthouses and a master craftsman showing qvevri wine-making, a tradition stretching back thousands of years.
The tour is full of contrasts: old towns, riverside roads with traffic, and quiet wine country; hills that range from gentle to tough; and plenty of fresh air between the city’s cafés and historic sites. It ends with a final night back in Tbilisi, where there's time to explore more of the city’s varied streets and markets.
